Very cool concept, I love this art! can you create a version that show the suit right below the rank of cards? I found out that it's hard to detect what rank is it at the first time I add to my game...
Sorry, I missed this comment. Thanks for liking. The original intent was to make a set of cards where their four colors and themes carried that weight. I didn't feel there was enough real estate to incorporate the full-sized suit icons with the high cards... and smaller versions didn't fit with the rest of the look, so I opted for a center placement and let the rest do the heavy lifting. Usability be darned. Having said that... these old cards could use one more overhaul. I have a good solution but it's more work than simply slapping them on under or next to the ranks. If it works out the answer is "Heck yeah! Here you go," but if I don't like it then the answer is "No, but you can absolutely take a crack at making the change for your needs." Let me fiddle for a bit. Thanks again for liking my work and, potentially, thanks for your patience in this matter.
Thank you for considering this, let me be more greedy, how about dice with this theme? Have to say that this is one of my favorite themes that can inspire me to make some games and I will pay for the dice if you make it.
Hi, this card art really inspired me when I saw it around half a year ago! Since then I've been working on turning it into a digital card game, which I just released this week. I thought I would let you know about it here :)
The game is called Royal Card Clash. It's a total reimagining of solo card games like Solitaire, with just you and a deck of playing cards. It's currently being featured by Apple on the App Store.
This is super rad! Thank you for using my set and for showing me your work! Now I feel real bad about never getting around to removing the blood stuff from the heart suit. Give me a sec for an update.
Hi, I wanted to confirm if this was OK to use your art since I got it in the Bundle for Racial justice so long ago- and wanted to use it in a TTRPG supplement (non-animated) that uses cards in the system. This supplement would be posted on itch later for PWYW, and properly credited to you as requested as 'Devlyn JD' (unless you would perfer elsewise?).
"This license enables reusers to copy and distribute the material in any medium or format in unadapted form only, and only so long as attribution is given to the creator. The license allows for commercial use." The No-Derivatives bit is just to have some legal backing if it ever gets back to me that someone replaced a spade with a hate symbol or something like that.
If you are saying you are going to directly redistribute the art as a standalone element for free and/or you get paid instead of me... well that hurts, fella. I like dollars. This stupid world runs on some form of dollars. My kids need dollars to eat. They eat dollars.
TL;DR: Yeah, put them in. If you make more money off them than I do, "I hate your guts forever and wish you the best of luck creating your stuff!" The credit is perfect.
You found it, here. I created the lore based on what each of the queens holds in their hand and what it could represent in a "ye old way" ...so to say. The aces are their "four kingdoms" and also reflect the values/resources/theme of the kingdom each suit represents. The place-names are printed on each ace card's border.
It's just some fun flavor for these little fellas. Thanks for being taken in enough by my blurb to research it! It means the world to me. Also, though, sorry I wasted some of your time trying to find a (thankfully) fictitious war.
Well, you did a great job with it! I would read a book or epic about these queens, lol. Nah, my time isn't valuable enough to be wasted. Love the assets btw!
Commercial use is good, in whole or in part. The only condition I ever put out there is that if you want to make artistic changes to the cards you show for approval (e.g. changing, adding to, or otherwise manipulating the face cards to fit a different theme would be approved, while changing the suit icons to hateful symbology is a no-go). Thanks for purchasing these old cards. I hope you enjoy working with them.
I love the variety in each suit, and the character given to each person, while still retaining consistency. The colors are vibrant, but gel well together.
I needed another poker deck, but couldn't find one I liked, so made up a printable version of your deck (gutterfold, with bleed on facing). There's a picture on BoardGameGeek. Would you like the PDF files in case others might want to print a copy? (It could probably be printed duplex by printing an extra page, like "1-17,1" and then telling the printer to flip on the correct edge.)
Also, if you wanted an easy way to provide printed cards, you could use a print-on-demand service like The Game Crafter. They have decent prices for US delivery, and solid quality.
Hey thanks for the catches! Too many versions is how many, currently. I haven't been maintaining my social presence or any of my old work here! Fixed my twitter, removed my portfolio (about time to rebuild and update anyway!) and hid away the redundant file downloads. Each frame of animation is 90x126 pixels, just like the individual cards. When I sweep back around to update all my work I will have a much friendlier setup for this mess of files (e.g. individual pngs for the anims as well as the sheets, consolidate all the fixes into a single pkg).
Hopefully this art works out for you in the mean time, and thanks for reaching out!
I haven't been around to answer the question, but yes. Credit Devlyn JD is all you gotta do if you haven't published yet, but if you did already ship it, no worries. If you didn't use it, serious apologies for not being around. Thanks for enjoying the art!
I bought your work because I thought it was very cool. But the card holding the sword feels a bit cruel. Can I edit this part and use it commercially? (I want to use it in a puzzle game.)
The reason for inquiring is that its license is [CC BY-ND 4.0].
In this regard, I saw an answer written two months ago. Most of the questions have been answered, but there are still problems.
Can I delete the sword from the [Sword Stuck King] card?
Can I change the sword of the [Queen with the Bloody Sword] card to a rose?
Can I remove the blood from the figure of [J holding a spear while bleeding] and change the spear to a quill?
(If the license is violated, the project must be stopped, so we will seriously asked you.)
Deleted replies, made a better one, if only barely! If you still use them, or have used them, or intend on ever using them again, changes are approved/cool. This was a missed opportunity for me to be groovy. Hopefully your work found it's mark.
Hey Greebles! I dig your work and used some of your cards on the second page of https://grimogre.itch.io/goss – I credited you, but let me know if you need me to do it differently.
Hello Greebles! I have been using these cards to play computer solitaire - they're four distinct colors while still being very clean and visually interesting, which I've found to be a surprisingly rare combination. I'd be happy to share back my PySolFC configuration file, if you'd like to include (or just have for your own use) a drop-in way to play with the cards.
I do want to mention a couple of technical modifications I made or am considering making to my copy:
Most important, I added a seventh diamond to my copy of the Seven of Diamonds. In the downloadable edition, all versions of the 7D have only six pips, where the other sevens have seven.
I'm also considering sharpening the top of the letter A on the aces, for readability in a stack. Solitaire games often pile cards very deep, which can cover the bottom half of the rank symbol, making it hard for me to tell the difference between Q, A, and 9 in this style. (Well, making me fall back to the tiny text on the border.)
Thank you again for making this visually appealing cardset, and thank you for participating in the BLM bundle!
never used assets before, but before I start I need reassurances that there will be no law suits or any complications down the line if I decide to use your cards. under what license or agreements or whatever thing can I be sure what the rules are here? Is itch responsible, or is it between us, or what? Simply a verbal agreement will not work for me.
Any licensing is between the user and the creator (to protect the creator's property just as much as the user). So, a few things:
For assets, we use Copyright Law.
Itch provides the options to link to Creative Commons (a service with preset licence arrangements) that the creator can link to, or the creator can reserve some or all rights, and I would need to include a document in the download files telling you your explicit permissions. But Itch doesn't send their legal team to handle any grievance I would have with you, or vice versa.
With that in mind:
In this case, with these cards, I WANT you to be able to use them, and I want you to feel good trying to make something of yourself with them if you have a DYNAMITE idea. So, they are royalty-free and can be used in commercial work without further permissions within the VERY LOOSE standards of the licence.
Creative Commons has written public licences for different levels of courtesy where all you have to do to "AVOID THE COURTS" is:
Attribute me (as GREEBLES, or DevlynJD).
DO NOT CHANGE THE ART or make derivatives. (E.G. no vegetables in place of the swords.)
This licence allows for commercial use.
"Do not directly post the asset pack on some shady dark-web place like Etsy saying it is yours and you made this" is the only protection I'm seeking.
Simply typing in the comments is a form of written correspondence and as such holds a bit of legal weight; if you and I have an exchange about, say, VEGETABLE DERIVATIVES, it is archival and retrievable. It isn't ironclad, but if I did go to the court and say you done me wrong by putting veggies in my art and you show Mr.Dr.Judgeman a comment where I said you COULD use vegetables in my art, you would win. So... in case we ever get there...
You, USER GEHGA, and YOU ALONE, have permission to add VEGETABLES to any of the HEART, SPADE, DIAMOND, and/or CLUB cards. The BLM cards are not allowed to be modified.
Whether I write it here or in a simple text doc won't change that I'M NOT GONNA COME AFTER YOU WITH MY CRACK EXPERT LEGAL TEAM. I do have a lawyer; he's a nine-years-old, but a legend in the civil circuit.
Thanks for being interested enough to seek legal protections! This is a good and scary feeling!
Please point me at your work if you decide to go forward with it (SO I CAN REVIEW IT, EVISCERATE IT, AND EAT ITS BABIES).
I know im a bit clumsy when expressing myself in text, so please forgive me. You seem really cool and I will consider using your cards if my idea truly feels like dynamite. And thanks alot for responding, I didn't expect an answer because you know thats how internet works I guess. Creative Commons, got it. My team of 1000 Lawyers thanks you for your cooperation.
Hi, is there a way that i could use this deck online with friends? I bought the BLM bundle so I already own it but id like to use it in some online ttrpg games
You may use the artwork for anything commercial or non-commercial, with attribution ("DevlynJD" or "Greebles") and can use the work in whole or in part for whatever project you have, online or offline without further permissions. Please do not directly redistribute the assets.
You cannot create derivatives or make changes to the art beyond technical-use case needs without permission. (This is only to protect the BLM Add-On.)
E.g. You can slice up the spritesheets, adjust the timing and order of the animations, and present the art however you see fit, but you can't just go and alter the depiction of the King of Diamonds so that he is holding a baguette without asking...
But since we're talking about them, you have permission to add baguettes. Say "baguette" real quiet-like and slow, like it's a dirty word or something. Try not to smile. I mean it's just bread? Baguette.
ME TOO, actually! I have just returned to my personal projects. For this I am doing a palette, transparency, and animation update for end of July. After that I will order a proof and post up my results in a devlog. If they feel right in the real world I will look thru if it is worth it to produce and sell, or build a campaign to get them out there.
Awesome news! I've been searching for some nice pixel art playing cards, and there have been some funded with kickstarter, but truthfully, I find yours a lot better. Best of luck if you decide to go ahead with it, and do let us know!

Oh yeah haha, I edited some of the most bloody elements out to make it more family friendly. No worries about it
Hi, out of curiosity... was it removed? the blood?
I created a version without blood *In addition to* the original version. Please see most recent update: https://greebles.itch.io/pixel-plebes/devlog/770066/a-bloodless-transfusion
Hello, I like your graphic style. How can I contact you for a project?
I like your moves. Thanks! gamedevlyn@gmail.com

What is "The Four Sisters' War and the Tragedy of Plebes"? Just really piqued my curiosity, and I can't seem to find anything about it on the web.
You found it, here. I created the lore based on what each of the queens holds in their hand and what it could represent in a "ye old way" ...so to say. do you approve adding more animations to the cards? obviously still with credit given
I'd say yes, but I'd also ask, "What kinda animations, fella?"
just to confirm... the face cards are the only ones included right? there is no design for the rest of the deck?
It is a full design for a standard 52 card deck. All cards come individually and together in sprite sheet from.
I want to buy but paypal doesn't available in my country, I live in Türkiye. How can i buy?
Same

I've got this card pack from a bundle, and when I saw it, I immediately wanted to use it but I didn't have time and opportunity to.
In the past few days, I've used it to create my Queens, and it got lots of love considering its art!
Thanks for creating such a great card pack, you are very talented!
Hello there!
Just passing by, looking for something different but... I just stopped by to tell you how absolutely amazing those cards look!
I will think of this asset if one day I need something like that :)
Hi, I've bought this pack on a bundle.
I am beginner and I just wanted to ask, what are the perfect pixel ratio to slice them for animation?
How many versions of it are in total ? because I see many folders :P
PD: Your Twitter account here on Itch doesn't work, also with your link twitter from your portfolio website. Maybe you want to fix that :P
Regards,
Spirit

Absolutely beautiful, love the juicy colours and the art style. Deffo gonna drop a follow!
Thank you for enjoying this and for the follow! +5 points for use of "Juicy"
Hi,
these cards are really cool, is it possible to use them to create a videogame for commercial purposes?
Thanks

Negasaurus Rex! I used PyxelEdit for these fellas, but I don't include it in the package.
Unique & Funny idea :)

Thank you for the notice of changes and for the error-catch!
The Full PKG has been updated with the 7D fix for everybody and I threw in a limited color version if you wanna grab it too.

Again, thank you, it means a lot!
You're very welcome! The fix looks good, and thank you as well!

Purchased. :)
Thank you for the support - and the compliment! Eventually... I will get around to setting up the print version and get a proof of it done.
